On top of the sweeping changes in tax laws we’ve seen in recent years, additional tax-related legislation was passed July 2019. This law, the Taxpayers First Act, aims to help taxpayers more effectively and favorably navigate dealings with the Internal Revenue Service. Among the concerns addressed in the new law are an increased emphasis on customer (taxpayer) service, a fresh review of innocent spouse relief claims, the creation of an independent IRS appeals office, giving more power to the National Taxpayer Advocate, and expanded protection for taxpayers against identity theft and other cybersecurity issues.
